GermWorks Face Lift
No I did not get a face lift, the website did! :p
Thanks first of all, thanks must go to Dandyna who created the original template that was available on Wordpress. I also used Christian Montoya’s blog entry on date styling for my dates. So thank you for letting me use their ideas and suggestions.
I decided to use an image free (besides the header and date) design so it will be quicker to load. To design it I opened IE 6.0 and Firefox 2.0 to regularly check everything. To make it look the same I deleted most of the padding so it will look the same as IE and Firefox use padding differently (will post article about padding soon).
As this is a liquid design which means the content moves with the screen resolution I used min and max widths. IE does not recognise the min and max width attributes in the style sheets so I had to use a hack. More on this: Width ie hack.
A little history about this blog. It first started as an University assignment were we had to blog our weekly readings of a journal. At the time the blog resembled a simple and ugly blogger template. Then I hacked and re-coded a blogger template and used the same style for germworks.net. The home page was the blog and I used a simple php script to direct people to the blogger url. A few months ago I migrated all the posts onto this currently wordpress blog. The benefits of that was so the user stayed on the same url and did not get redirected etc. The problem with the previous style was that it was too narrow and it had wasted space and real estate, so I now am using a elastic style.

Two little updates today….
One: I had the
a:visitedlink styling after thea:hoverand so this meant that the hover styling did not work probably for visited links. Sloppy but an easy mistake made and also fixed.I have also moved the sidebar div of ‘main categories’ above the ‘recent posts’. The ‘main categories’ is for people who may only be interested in certain categories of my blogging, like for example my web posts.
Hope these help and have made the blog a little better…
