Cricket World Cup Super Eights - Week one

The round-robin series is finished and now the real tournament starts. The eight teams play each other once (except if they played each other in roudn robin) and then the top four go through to the semi finals. The four teams (West Indies, Australia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka) that finished on top of their tables carry two points into this stage. The biggest surprise about the tournament so far is that Pakistan and India are both out with lesser teams like Bangladesh and Ireland getting through.

March 27, West Indies vs Australia
Australia should win this as we have looked good so far with our batters getting runs and our bowlers getting wickets including Hoggy and tait is looking good. However West Indies are unpredictable and they can match the Aussies when on fire. Australia for me.

March 28, South Africa vs Sri Lanka
This should be a cracker of a game, apart from SA little bump against Australia they look in top form and so do Sri Lanka. I am tipping Sri Lanka in a close one.

March 29, West Indies vs New Zealand
West Indies come up against NZ only two games after their Australian game and maybe that could hurt them as NZ and Australia are both hard teams. If Australia beat the Windies comfortably, I would tip NZ to do the same with their confidence shot.

March 30, Ireland vs England
Surprised many that Ireland got through and I guess you could say that Ireland going through actually cost someone’s life. It would be great to see England get knocked off by Ireland but England should get some confidence with a comfy win hear.

March 31, Australia vs Bangladesh
Bangladesh has beaten Australia before in the not-so famous Ashes tour back in 2005. Bangladesh is a team on the rise but I still think they have a bit to go before they can beat top teams regularly.

April 1, West Indies vs Sri Lanka
By this stage I guess we will see were the West Indies are with three hard games against Australia, NZ and then Sri Lanka. I am tipping Sri Lanka again.

April 2, Bangladesh vs New Zealand
New Zealand again with an easy win against Bangladesh but NZ did loose to them in the practice matches so they should have some confidence over the kiwi’s.

April 3, Ireland vs South Africa
Ireland gave SA a run for their money in their first practice match. I am sure SA will not be taking it easy again.


Out of the eight teams I think the four that will get through will be: Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and New Zealand.

Rain washed out the West Indies batting. The Aussies looked flat especially with their running in the first 18 odd overs. Hussey also looks out of form, he could do with a score, WC does not get any bigger.,….

Australia won and that gives them a great edge but seeing SA also won they are officially number one and they get the prize money, which sucks…

The game between SA and Sri Lanka turned out to be close with the bowlers having some success. Kallis turned from hero to villian with a steady (yet still slow) score.

Now the West Indies have to turn up again wih their game against New Zealand.

England just scrapped home against Ireland. I think England are just making up the numbers along with Ireland…

I think the order of the eight will be:

  1. Australia
  2. Sri Lanka
  3. South Africa
  4. New Zealand
  5. Bangladesh
  6. West Indies
  7. England
  8. Ireland
