What is Baptism all about?

Water Baptism at our church
I will attempt to answer some of these questions. Please note that I do not claim to know all and these are just my own opinions and yours are welcomed. So if you have any other inputs, scriptures please feel free to add them.
Why do we Baptise people?
John the Baptise, baptised many people in a form of them turning away from their sins. Jesus then died on the cross which was the price of forgiveness of sins for all of us. However a water baptism is still practiced as it is a form of a public declaration of your conversion and stance on the things and following Jesus.

Moses and Isrealits crossing the Red SeaWere did it come from?

Moses and Isrealits crossing the Red Sea
I always thought water baptism came from John the Baptism but it has much older roots which include Elijah when he told Naaman to dip into the river Jordan to be cleansed of his leprosy (2 Kings 5:1-19). This shows that his sin (sickness) was left behind when he submerged (humbled himself) into the river.
Another example even older than Naaman is the crossing of the Red Sea by the newly freed Israel nation from Egypt (Exodus 14). In this the people were forced to go through the water and leave their problems, issues, fears, insecurities (Egyptians) behind them and then God washed them away.
What does it represent?
As shown with my illustration of the Red sea, water baptism represents a turning from your old ways and turning towards a new way of life in the promise land of milk and honey.

I like this - it breaks it down and very simple to read and understand - I remember when I got baptised it wasnt really explained to me so I didnt really understand what baptism really represented and why we did it… This is very informative and even helps me today (5 years later)
