Vancouver-based artist Elyse Dodge reinvents local mountain ranges as otherworldly landscapes made of colorful geometric shapes. Inspired by the incredible beauty of British Columbia, Dodge reveals that its goal is to “capture the vibrant beauty of the landscapes we call home.” Using a bold color palette, the artist’s contemporary landscape paintings explore the contrast between hard and soft by highlighting the various shapes found in nature. Cliffs, hills, and peaks rendered with crisp graphic lines are juxtaposed against the soft, organic textures of the trees.
Taking advantage of social media, Dodge uses Instagram to find and partner with landscape photographers. After researching its reference images, Dodge then uses its past experience in graphic design to create digital models. Once satisfied with the geometric transformation, she begins painting each candy-colored triangle on her canvas. Dodge explains, “Polygonal shapes transform the peaks of something that is recognizable as a mountain to a faceted, diamond-like shape. These surreal scenes encourage the mind to imagine what an alternate, more vivid world might look like. “
You can see more of Dodge’s colorful mountain scenery on it website.
