The artist fills his paintings with landscapes of expressive and colorful skies

Artist Jim musil uses his brush to capture the changing patterns of the sky in striking Impressionist-style landscape paintings. Each of her acrylic panels features a wide variety of textures, including watercolor washes, dry brushing, and geometric color blocks. In doing so, the artist’s immersive expressionist skies convey a strong sense of emotion that affects the landscapes depicted below.

Although Musil studied painting in college, he did not pursue art until many years later. “In fine arts school, I never had much patience for painting. I found it too difficult and ruthless ”, the artist explained on his site. It wasn’t until 2016 that Musil resumed his brush, triggering a rush of inspired and creative work. Since then, the artist has favored representations of nature over urban life with scenes ranging from meadows, deserts, seascapes and wooded lakes.

“For me, painting is like a puzzle – you have to scrutinize each piece and place them in the right relationship with each other,” Musil said. The majority of its square hardboard panels feature a broad, towering sky that is anchored by bucolic soil. While the artist’s specialty is scanning environments, he often includes a more detailed subject that the viewer can focus on, such as flowers, trees, boats, and sometimes a human figure.
