The figurative paintings of Carol Magatta

RED BANK, NJ – Carol Magnatta’s figurative paintings are large-scale, mixed media. Each work begins as a smaller-scale drawing made from life in pastel. Sometimes she works from several models, sometimes from a single character, using the pictorial style that has long been her signature to enhance the sensuality of the characters and their environment. As she progressed in these works, she found that she did not want to lose all the qualities of the original line drawings and therefore began to combine the oil stick with the oil paint.

Magnatta adds background, removes it, or combines characters, all with the goal of creating a subtle narrative out of what many would consider the still periods between actions. To use musical terms, you could say that it depicts the rests between notes. These calm but emotionally charged scenes offer a voyeuristic glimpse into those times when something is about to happen – those pregnant breaks that punctuate our lives and provide a foil for the shorter, stronger moments of intense activity and of drama.
