Reference to Marco Ferreri’s mordant 1970s satire of the same name, FeastWhere The big party, saturates simple foods found in pantries and refrigerators with unexpected grandeur. The personal exhibition presented at London Unit features vivid paintings by a Belgian artist Kristof Santy that transform humble dishes like a wedge of cheddar or a slice of watermelon into luminous foodie celebrations.

Often set against textured tile backgrounds or striped wallpapers, oil-based works tend to either be devoid of human life or depict figures in rigid stasis: a butcher stiffly lifts a broom into the At the entrance to the store, a finger peels a can of fish with precision, and pans full of sausages and other meats are fried on an unattended stove. Rendered with Santy’s characteristic flatness, the paintings showcase the sometimes unnoticed yet sumptuous qualities of everyday food.

Feast is on view until August 6, and you can find an archive of the artist’s decadent works at his website and instagram.
